Knee alignment

Knees can really be such a pain. I grew up with ‘rules’ such as ‘lift with the knees not the back’ or ‘bend your knees and not your back’ and it really set me up for some knee issues early on in life.

Our knees can take a lot of unnecessary loading by the way we walk, sit down, stand up, lift and carry. Once you understand the mechanics of the knee and understand that a lot of work we expect our knees to do is actually what our glutes should be doing it becomes clear why our knees hurt so much and so often.

Here are two photos showing the ligaments that can help us see how are knees are aligned (although it does help to have someone else to take some photos)
We are looking at the drawn in parallel lines here (thanks to my partner who had to go to work like this the next day as I inadvertently used a permanent marker). I will talk more about this in the video below.
