Why we end with tea and flapjack (and why it matters more than you think)

When I started running sound baths it was way back at the end of lockdown, 2021. The idea for this was twofold, first that any opportunity for people to be able to sit and chat together seemed so important.

Secondly having been to a few sound baths  and gong baths myself I felt that just leaving straight after such a deep relaxation was actually so counter productive. Having to get in a car and start driving so quickly got the adrenalin flowing again. I found it hard to concentrate properly and by the time I got home I felt just as tense as when I’d left.

Having a warm drink and something tasty to eat helps  with grounding. After a deep meditation chewing, tasting and digesting help shift your energy back into the body, into physical sensations.

A space afterwards gives people time to process what they have just experienced, to feel the difference from when they entered the  room and now. Often people like to describe what they felt, ask questions, or sit in quiet – a luxury not always available at home.

But what’s really come out of these post sound bath moments is connection. Regulars have become good friends. Which has carried on outside of the sound baths, meeting for lunch,  checking in on each other during trying times or trying out other groups together.

It’s become a place where the group can offer a shoulder to cry on, seek advice, share new experiences and have a laugh together.

Newcomers feel and comment on the cozy welcoming atmosphere and those who have come on their own are embraced in to conversations and made to feel a part of the community.

I often look round at the end as people are enjoying the  tea, munching on flapjack and think how I have inadvertently created something really special and meaningful.

What started as a way of giving people somewhere to land after a sound bath has become so much more than that. It’s become a place for connection, friendship, laughter, support and simply being with other people.

Because the nurturing care of a sound bath doesn’t end when the sounds stop. Sometimes, that’s where something even more meaningful begins.
